We've all been there – starting a task with high enthusiasm and then feeling it slip away, leading to procrastination and, eventually, burnout. It's a cycle that's as frustrating as it is familiar. The key, however, lies in shifting your mindset. Imagine transforming decluttering from a daunting chore into an exciting challenge. This shift in perspective can make a world of difference!

Today, let's talk about not just reigniting your motivation but also finding joy and satisfaction in the decluttering process. These strategies aren't just one-off solutions; they're adaptable skills that can enhance various aspects of your life.

And for those times when it's not just a lack of motivation but also a feeling of exhaustion and lack of inspiration, I've got you covered. Stick around, and let's explore how to turn the tide on decluttering and make it a rewarding, even enjoyable, part of your routine.

#1. Develop A 10 Second Vision

I stand by developing a 10-second vision every day. It’s a meditation habit that helps you stay mindful and focused on your vision and why.

Finding you’re “why” to stay motivated

A big part for anyone to do anything successfully really depends on their personal why. I could give you reasons all day for why you should declutter but until you have a personal reason it’s likely you won’t stay motivated to do it.

You need a purpose for doing what you’re doing and that is your “why”. Not having a purpose or why makes it really difficult to get out of those moments of feeling sluggish.

Lucky for you, it doesn’t have to be this massive “thing”. There is no need to get a poster board, magazines, glue, and scissors to put an entire vision board together (even though I love a good vision board).

Taking just 10 seconds is enough to dial you in and develop a vision. The hardest part can be the “figuring it out” bit because you don’t know what to expect. But having a vision clarifies and inspires you instead of leaving you in limbo to “figure it out”.

I recommend in those 10 seconds getting center and focusing on how you want to feel, what you want to experience, and the benefits that will come to be!

From there you can start using the rest of these tools to help stay motivated!

#2. Feed Your Brain

If there is something you want to be improving, keep it at the top of your mind! The easiest way to do this (which I currently do) is to put it in places you are already going.

I am talking about your Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, etc. Curate a feed that will inspire you. Everything we consume through audio and visual has the power to inspire and kick start your motivation!

If you aren’t a digital person there are still ways to do this through the magazines your read or the TV you watch. Even the people you are surrounded by and communicating with can inspire you.

Feeding your brain works hand-in-hand with #1: developing a 10-second visions. If you aren’t able to get that vision going on your own and stay motivated, the content being consumed by your brain can fill in those gaps.

#3. Take Action

So many people never start towards a goal or vision because they lack motivation and inspiration. It’s rarely the case that motivation turns into acting though.

It definitely does happen that you hear someone speak or see an idea that gets you so jazzed up you have to take action. But how often does that feeling last and become successful?

People don’t live at 100% motivation all the time, that’s just the truth. Most people never consider that you can build inspiration and motivation through ACTION!

As you start taking action what may have started as a small bit of inspiration can turn into a bigger thing. You can spark new ideas, and get a better vision of what you want once taking action.

Sometimes the easiest way to get motivated is to start with something small. Maybe it’s cleaning out one drawer? But those small results will lead to momentum for more.

#4. Take A Picture A Week

When tackling any big goal over a longer period of time it’s easy to fall into the headspace of “this looks the same” or even “this looks worse than when I started”. After putting in hours of work those sneaky thoughts can be really harmful to your motivation.

If you take pictures from the time you started a project though you can see more clearly what has been accomplished.

This is a great tool for people who haven’t even started to declutter yet also. Our brains have a hard time distinguishing things as clutter or out of place if it sees them every day. Something about taking a picture though changes the way you see the space.

That’s why I recommend everyone take a picture a week whether you are already working to declutter or if you are trying to get started! Getting out of the default setting of “nothing has changed” or “nothing is wrong” is just a picture away.

Trust me, your eyes will be opened!

#5. Find Your Tribe

I talked about being around the right people when feeding your brain because other people’s attitudes and opinions can really affect your motivation.

I know you can’t always control who you’re surrounded by (sometimes your teenagers are in a bad mood and bringing you down), but you can always find other groups of people. The internet is a great tool for finding other like-minded people.

All the time I see people connect and relate to one another in the comments of my videos! Having that connection with other humans is important because we are social creatures (whether you’re introverted or extroverted!).

There are loads of different places online you can find your tribe. There are comments on your favorite YouTuber page, Facebook groups, or even Reddit threads.

Where ever you find your people, staying connected can really help you maintain motivation and inspiration toward your goals.

Which Will You Begin With?

Those are my 5 ways to stay motivated especially if you are numb to the clutter. There is nothing stopping you from getting started now! You could go to this week’s YouTube video and leave a comment to get connected. Or you can clean out one desk drawer!
