Self-Care Habits at Home

If you’re overwhelmed and too busy to take the time you need for yourself, these simple self-care ideas may be the exact thing you need. Whether it’s work, raising a family, or people around you demanding your free time, it’s easy to end up in a position where you find yourself with no time dedicated to your own well-being.

Problem is, if you’re not taking steps to be the best version of ‘you’, you won’t be the best version of ‘you’ for others, either.

Imagine if we lived in a world where we all took time to care for ourselves and feel our best. Things would look a lot more positive, and we would all have more room within ourselves to share that joy with others.

Taking care of yourself is essential because once you take care of yourself, you will set the stage for those around you; therefore, you’ll feel more confident, content, re-energized, and less stressed.

I know life is busy… it may feel like you can’t make a change at this point in time (let alone carve out space to take care of your own needs). But luckily, that’s where these tiny, simple self-care ideas come in🎉.

Simple Self-care Ideas

Many people take an “all or nothing” approach to self-care. It’s often glamorized as a luxury weekend retreat or a big day in the city- which isn’t realistic for most of us in our current situation.

So-

Even if you only have 10 minutes or fewer a day, minor changes to your routine can help you maximize your well-being.

In this post, I’ll cover 5 simple self-care ideas that involve nothing but minor tweaks – it could be just what you need to add more zest and energy to your life without overloading yourself with extra commitments.

Let’s explore how integrating these simple self-care ideas into your life can be achievable, enjoyable, and beneficial- regardless of whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, a CEO, or somewhere in between!

#1. String-Up Posture

Good posture plays a major role in our physical, mental, and emotional well-being, yet it’s often overlooked and is one of the super simple self-care ideas you should start practicing.

On the contrary, poor posture can cause pain, fatigue, weakness, and even impair our ability to think and concentrate. Therefore, practicing something as simple as good posture can bring you astounding benefits, such as:

  • Improved breathing
  • Increased energy levels
  • Improved confidence
  • Better balance
  • Improved circulation

The string technique involved simply imagining a string on the top of your head pulling you up, which elongates your posture. It’s so simple and a quick boost you can implement into any part of your day.

You can also encourage better posture by taking regular breaks from sitting or standing for too long to help reduce muscle fatigue or tension from your day.

Taking regular walks or stretches can also help increase your flexibility and strengthen the muscles you need for good posture.

Practicing these simple self-care ideas with consistent effort, this simple self-care idea will help you naturally maintain proper alignment over time, and you’ll feel 1000% more optimized!

#2. Box Breathing & Extended Exhales

Box breathing is a simple yet powerful relaxation technique that uses focused, slow breaths to reduce stress.

Breathing techniques are one of the best, simple, self-care ideas to learn because they help to boot our minds out of the “automated process of everyday life” mode and help your nervous system calm down.

If you struggle with anxiety and lack resources to support you, breathing techniques can be a life-changing way to help calm your mind and body at the touch of your finger.

In box breathing, you take a deep breath in for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of four, exhale for a count of four, and then hold your breath for another count of four.

This type of breathing will help you relax, improve focus, and even lower your blood pressure.

Extended exhales help lower the adrenaline level in your body and create more space between stimulus and reaction. When we practice slowing down our breathing, it can help us become more aware of our thoughts and feelings- improving our ability to regulate them.

Taking slow, deep breaths also helps oxygenate the body’s cells, which leads to better energy and clarity. Practicing this extended exhale with box breathing can be incredibly calming and beneficial to overall health.

#3. Sleep

Most of us have heard of LeBron James (if not, he’s a well-recognized, successful athlete)- well, did you know he actually prioritizes his sleep above all else?

He insists that 8 hours of sleep at night and a 2-hour nap are essential to his routine, and he follows a precise routine without fail; for reason that sleep is how he achieves the most optimization. (Read more about it here)

Sleep is essential for both our physical and mental health. It allows us to rest and recharge, restoring energy levels and helping us stay productive, focused, and alert during the day.

It also reduces stress levels, enhances mood, and has been linked to increased creativity!

Unfortunately, many of us do not get the recommended sleep each night. Lack of sleep can lead to various negative health effects, such as the increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, as well as difficulty concentrating and decreased performance in school or at work.

Taking care of yourself by getting enough sleep is a simple self-care idea that will help you feel your best each day. Here are some easy tips to help you get a good night’s sleep:

  1. Establish a consistent bedtime routine;
  2. Finish eating at least two hours before bedtime;
  3. Limit caffeine intake in the afternoon;
  4. Avoid drinking alcohol late in the evening;
  5. Exercise regularly;
  6. Try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or yoga;
  7. Reduce screen time before bed and keep your bedroom dark and cool (with white noise if necessary).

When you prioritize getting enough restful sleep each night, you’ll have more energy for daily activities like exercising or taking on projects. You’ll also be better equipped to handle stressors throughout the day.

Or, if you have a newborn at home (like me), allow yourself to sleep at whatever free moment you have to catch up on some needed 💤

So, make sure you take some time out each day for self-care that promotes good sleep–even just 15 minutes of yoga or meditation can help put your mind at ease before heading off to dreamland!

#4. Increase Oxytocin

Another one of the simple self-care ideas that can have a big impact on your health and happiness is increasing the love hormone oxytocin.

You know those butterflies you feel when you first fall in love or look at your baby for the first time? You guessed it- that’s oxytocin!

Oxytocin is a hormone released in response to social interaction, like physical touch or spending time with loved ones. It plays a vital role in helping you form strong relationships, promoting feelings of trust and intimacy, and even aiding in pain relief and feeling more “warm and fuzzy.”

Besides helping you experience deeper connections with other people, oxytocin also has some amazing benefits for your mental health, including reducing stress, anxiety, and depression levels.

You can increase oxytocin levels at home without relying solely on external social interaction or activities. Things like hugging or cuddling with someone else. (although that’s a very simple way to boost oxytocin!)

Making time for simple activities like reading a book together or playing board games with family members can help build those much-needed connections between one another while also releasing oxytocin levels.

Engaging in gentle exercises like yoga or pilates are some additional yet simple self-care ideas to boost oxytocin production. It helps relax both body and mind- allowing space for quality bonding time with loved ones.

#5. Hydrate Everything

Hydrating is essential regarding simple self-care ideas. Staying hydrated helps keep the body functioning properly and can even help improve skin, hair, and nail health.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is one of the simplest things you can do for yourself. Opt for plain water, or add some lemon, lime, or cucumber slices for flavor if desired!

Not a fan of water? You may also want to consider herbal tea or coconut water! If you are an avid coffee drinker, note that coffee is actually dehydrating. Therefore, you need to boost your water intake to balance it out!

Taking time out from your busy schedule for some “me time” may also improve your mood and overall energy level. Taking a few extra minutes to hydrate your lips and skin or plop in a hair mask are simple habits that greatly improve how we feel!
